Guinness Book entry for the fastest biomethane vehicle. On the 29th April, 2009, the German TÜV Rheinland group with TÜV Saarland automobil GmbH, an NGVA Europe member, presented the world's fastest Natural Gaz Vehicle. The Audi A4 model, converted to Compressed Natural Gas and powered by biomethane, reached the speed of 364,6 Km/h, on the F1 racetrack at Nürburgring. Therefore, this vehicle entered in the Guinness Book for holding the world record for the fastest Natural Gaz vehicle.
This event took place in the German Eifel region. The Natural Gas Vehicle was powered by certified biomethane, a H-Gas quality, which is easily available at public CNG filling stations. The Swadgelock Company provided vehicle components for the build-up of this car. The Schandl’s mobile filling station system was used to fuel the vehicle directly on the racetrack.
This Media Day offered as well the opportunity to show the innovation of car manufacturers. The visitors had the chance to drive themselves Gas Vehicle, such as the Opel Zafira Turbo CNG, VW Passat TSI EcoFuel, Ford Focus ST CNG, among others. Some of the highlights in this car show were the presentation of the CNG versions of the Mercedes-Benz SLK, converted by MBetech and of a BMW 320d dual fuel, converted by Bosch Engineering.
This project was the opportunity to demonstrate that vehicles powered by gas are today available with similar performance characteristics as petrol powered cars for a quite safe technology.
